Professionalism in action
Sergey Ivanov, a boring lathe operator and an employee of Metafrax Chemicals, became the silver medallist of the regional stage of the All–Russian Professional Skills Competition titled "The Best in Profession".
The competition was held as part of the national project titled "Human Resources" and brought together 40 participants from 25 leading enterprises of the Kama region. The competitions were held in four categories: "Lathe operator", "Milling machine operator", "CNC machine operator" and "Electrician"
At the professional competition, Metafrax was represented by young employees of the service for maintenance and repair of equipment in process workshops (POROTS) – Sergey Ivanov, a boring lathe operator, and Aleksey Parfutsky, a lathe operator. According to the results of the competition, Sergey Ivanov entered the top three of the Perm Region in the "Milling machine operator" category. He took the second place as he lacked a few points to take the first.
The competition was held at the Perm College of Industrial and Information Technologies named after B.G. Izgarin. The participants had to go through a theoretical stage consisting of a test and one spoken question on knowledge of materials science, machine design, processing technology, labour protection and industrial safety rules. In addition, they had to complete a practical task – to make three parts, which eventually had to be assembled into a single product.
- We had three and a half hours to complete the practical task. At first glance, it seems that this is a lot, but actually time passes very quickly. I was confident in my abilities, I had sufficient experience in milling, and the part manufacturing process itself did not cause any difficulties, but I spent a lot of time studying the controls of the machine. I have never worked with such a machine before, so I had to get to know it first, get used to it, - said Sergey Yurievich. -I couldn't help but worry, the best milling machine operators from the leading enterprises of the region competed against me. I think I rose to the challenge.
Sergey Ivanov has been working at Metafrax for 9 years, he has extensive experience of operating milling machines, and he started working at the company as a milling machine operator, so this particular category was chosen for participation in the regional competition. Moreover, in 2023 Sergey Ivanov became the winner among the milling machine operators at the regional competition for young professionals titled "Pro-team".
Sergey Yurievich is expanding his competencies, today he works as a boring lathe operator with the right to control a CNC. The numerically controlled machine, which he operates. is designed for milling and boring complex parts. In POROTS, this machine is receiving a special treatment.
- I write the program for each detail myself, it is important to take into account all the nuances and parameters, - said Sergey Ivanov. – To work with this machine, I underwent special training in St. Petersburg and my mentor - Viktor Nikolaevich Pirogov - taught me a lot on the spot.
He admits that he did not prepare for the practical part separately: "My daily work is practice." However, he had to work on the theory.
- I read the instructions, refreshed my memory of labour protection rules, and solved tests. This is necessary, here you cannot take a winning place without preparation. Thank you to the foremen, heads of sectors and departments of the workshop for their help in preparation for the competition, - noted Sergey Ivanov.
Another one of our participants, Aleksey Parfutsky, the winner of the corporate professional skills competition, tried his hand at the "Lathe operator" nomination at the regional stage. Unfortunately, during the practical task, Aleksey's machine broke down, and it took precious minutes to adjust to another one. As a result, the 60 minutes allotted for the task were not enough for him to produce the part in full accordance with the drawing. He did not get into the top three.
The award ceremony for the winners of the competition took place at the regional meeting on labour protection. The organizers of the professional competition noted the high professionalism and skill of all participants, their competence and responsibility.
